Winner of the 2026 Ville de Perpignan Rémi Ochlik Visa d’or Award

After decades of dictatorship and thirteen years of war in Syria, it took less than a week to bring down Bashar al-Assad’s regime. On December 8, 2024, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group seized power in Damascus, redefining Syria’s fate. The greatest challenge facing this new transitional government will be to unify the country’s different communities and armed groups. In order to achieve lasting peace, it will have to satisfy the different internal and external parties. In a fractured and traumatized country, the wounds of the past resurfaced in flashes over the course of this first year of transition.
